The latest for locs
Looking for hold and shine for locs? Try Entwine Couture’s Crème De La Mold and the 100% Raw and Vegan Argan Oil. The Crème De La Mold is infused with natural butters, oils, and a Micro-Fibrous Holding Technology for starting locs, maintenance, grooming edges and smoothing the loc shaft. The Argan Oil spray moisturizes and adds shine to dry locs. Both contain no mineral oil, petrolatum (both add dirt and buildup), Phthalates or Parabens. Before writing this post, I smoothed some onto my dry locs and the roots after I shampooed earlier in the day. It did define my edges and my partings at the roots. It also added softness and reduced frizziness, which always happens after I shampoo. To order, go to entwinecouture.com
If you want to adorn your locs for that special occasion or just because, try attaching cowrie shells. These cultural pearls are one of the oldest forms of currency, a symbol of femininity and fertility, and a sign of royalty. They can be applied with either small rubberbands, or if you want them in permanently, you can have them sewn in by your loctician.
Available at craft or beauty supply stores, cowrie shells can be attached to your locs several ways. I found some pre-drilled shells and pushed a small, black 1-inch rubberband through the hole, then pulled one end through the other to form a slip knot of sorts. Slip a loc through the rubberband loop to attach. You can also attach to the ends by using a bobby pin and slipping it onto the end of one of your locs. Then slide the pin through the opening of the top of a cowrie shell until the loc is inside the opening of the shell. Remove the bobby pin, secure with small rubberbands.
The Next Day
See locs on the big screen in the film, The Next Day, an official selection at the 18th Annual Black Harvest Film Festival in Chicago. The film, written, directed, and starring Alfred Robbins, and featuring co-star DeAnna Dawn (both of whom wear locs), is the story of a relationship that starts with a one-night-stand and ends with unintended consequences, twists, and turns. Two years ago, Loc’d Life interviewed the stars of the then internet serial (See our interview at www.locdlife.com/nextday.html.) If you missed an episode, you can see the full feature length film on Friday, August 10th at 6:15 p.m. and Saturday, August 11th at 8:30 p.m. at the Gene Siskel Film Center. The Next Day has been named the 2012 Official Selection at the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival, and the 2012 Official Selection of the International Black Women’s Festival.
